American Airlines adds Daytona Beach to Dallas + Philly; big boost for DAB
Both Dallas and Philadelphia will be served once-daily between 17 December and 5 April.
Mesa will use its 76-seat CRJ-900s to Dallas, while Philadelphia will be operated by PSA’s 65-seat CRJ-700s.
Dallas is by far American’s top hub and the carrier had 85% of seats at the airport last year – a true fortress hub. And American’s presence there has grown quickly in recent years from the addition of multiple new gates.
Speaking of American’s new routes, Karen Feaster, Daytona Beach’s Airport Director, said: “American is a great airline partner, and we are thrilled they are adding new routes here. This is a very uncertain time for the airline industry, but the leadership at American understands the desire for travel to and from the Daytona Beach area.”
American Airlines provides a big boost
With 794,000 two-way seats last year, Daytona Beach ranked 161 in the US ahead of Augusta but behind Bloomington.
It was in front of Florida’s Gainesville (175) but behind Tallahassee (137) and Key West (132).
Daytona Beach revolves around both Atlanta and Charlotte and has done so for many years. These two routes accounted for 96% of its total capacity last year, OAG Schedules data shows.
In the week starting 10 February 2020, so before coronavirus, Charlotte had 36 weekly frequencies and Atlanta 33. The latter was mainly by B717s but also B737-800s and MD-90s (since retired); the former, primarily by CRJ-900s but also A319s.
American’s new Dallas and Philadelphia services will help to offset the loss of JetBlue to New York JFK and Silver to Fort Lauderdale. And, given coronavirus, the (temporary?) loss of Sunwing to Toronto.
JetBlue began JFK in 2016 with a year-round once-daily service using A320s. It ended in January 2019, the same month that Silver commenced a once-daily Fort Lauderdale service using Saab 340s. That ended in June.
Connections to 40 destinations over Dallas
American will have two-way connectivity to 40 destinations from Daytona Beach over Dallas, OAG Connections Analyser indicates.
This is based on the first week the route starts, a maximum circuity of 30% (i.e., 30% longer than a non-stop would be), and a maximum layover of four hours.
These 40 had approximately 81,000 passengers to/from Daytona Beach last year, MIDT booking data via OAG Traffic Analyser shows. Los Angeles was top, followed by Denver, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.
Of these 81,000, American captured just one-quarter over Charlotte, so the good opportunity to grow its penetration of them through Dallas.
