Indian LCC GoAir attracts BA’s interest; Mumbai-Delhi route represents almost 50% of winter capacity
GoAir recently celebrated its third birthday but is not growing as fast as originally planned. Its network is dominated by one route (the most competitive in India!) and its fleet consists of just seven aircraft. Since the BA bid appears to have failed where does the airline’s future lie?
This week sees another batch of new routes launched by Aegean Airlines, AirAsia X, Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Air, Belle Air, Cebu Pacific, China Southern, Norwegian, Porter Airlines, Ryanair (just one new route this week!) and Sama.

With Indian domestic traffic now falling at almost 20% the country’s two biggest private airlines have forged an alliance. What market share will they have at key airports and who will be their biggest rivals? At which major airport will they have less than a 50% share?
This week’s new routes are provided by Aer Lingus, airBaltic, Allegiant Air, easyJet, Indian Airlines, IndiGo, Kingfisher Red and Ryanair. The PR departments at easyJet (five new routes) and IndiGo (four new routes) have been kept busiest. We also report on the start of a new airline, GeorgiaSkies.
India’s fifth largest domestic airline is growing rapidly and now operates 18 aircraft across 18 destinations. Last year it received its first 737-900s and carried around 3.5 million passengers. Delhi is the country’s busiest airport and nearly all routes are operated at least daily. International routes are on the cards as soon as the government will permit them.
