Italy and Greece have been the main beneficiaries of new route launches (from Air Italy, blu-express, easyJet and Wizz Air) this week as we head into the peak of the European summer season. Other interesting new routes are provided by Estonian Air, Tiger Airways and yet another new route from Turkish Airlines.
Air passenger traffic in Estonia, one of the EU’s smaller nations, trebled between 2003 and 2006. Its loss-making national carrier (part-owned by SAS) has added several new routes this year. What role do LCCs play in the country and what other airports offer scheduled flights?
Estonia joined the EU in 2004. With a population of just 1.2 million people the airport at Tallinn handled around 1.5 million passengers in 2006, double the number in 2003. National carrier Estonian Air is also growing quickly, but not that quickly. How is the airline performing and what new routes is it adding next year?
