New routes launched during the last week (Tuesday 18 May – Monday 24 May):
Over 60 new routes this week with a strong bias towards European LCCs. Cimber Sterling, easyJet, Jet2.com, Ryanair and Wizz Air all launched multiple routes. But AirAsia, Avianova, BA CityFlyer, Delta, Flydubai, Southwest, Spanair and Transaero among others all had reasons to celebrate this week.

The last week has been another busy week with 87 routes being launched by 27 of the world’s airlines. New routes have started in countries as varied as across 25 European countries as well as Canada, China, Dominican Republic, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Syria, South Africa and the US.

This week’s super batch of new routes were dominated by US carriers starting new domestic services. But Air Canada, Kingfisher, Lufthansa, Ryanair, Transavia.com and Virgin Blue were among others with reason to celebrate this week. We have lots more amazing cake photos to celebrate.

A modest selection of new routes this week as airlines prepare for the big “summer season” changeover. However, Aer Lingus (Ireland), Bahrain Air (Bahrain), Hainan Airlines (China), Jeju Air (Korea), Mexicana Link (Mexico), Singapore Airlines (Singapore) and Turkish Airlines (Turkey) still choose this week to launch new destinations. But to where?

Europe’s major hubs are mostly losing passengers, especially Madrid where things have changed a lot in a short period. Among secondary hubs only three out of 11 are still growing. Can you guess which ones? You may be surprised!

While only two of Europe’s top 6 major hubs reported growth in July, most of the home airports of Europe’s smaller flag-carriers reported traffic growth. Alitalia’s single-hub strategy has helped Rome. The re-timing of Easter had a noticeable impact on traffic at several major airports.
Portugal’s momentum builds as LCCs start to make their presence felt
Portugal has finally begun to embrace LCCs and international passenger numbers are booming in Faro, Lisbon and Porto. easyJet is big in Lisbon while Ryanair is rivalling TAP Portugal in Porto. TAP is struggling to make profits but has recently absorbed Portugalia to help provide long-haul feed. Brazil and Angola feature among the top 10 countries served.
