Routes
Bahrains
“Many airlines
operating at Bahrain
have increased their
capacity towards the
end of 2013,
including Qatar
Airways, KLM, flydubai, Air
India, Oman Air and Gulf Air,
owing to the growth in
demand,” comments Waleed
Fakhro, Manager of Airline
Development and Marketing
Commercial Department for the
airport. “We anticipate a 6%
increase in passengers in 2014,
especially with the recent
launch of new routes to
Trivandrum, Sialkot, Mashhad,
and additional flights by Gulf
Air to Dubai Al Maktoum.”
“In the short-term, 2014 looks
very promising, especially since
Gulf Air has shown strong signs
of recovery,” continues Fakhro.
“It has increased frequency
to a number of destinations,
including Dubai and Riyadh, and
has also opened up a number of
important destinations linking
Bahrain to the world.”
Unserved targets
Bahrain will focus its energy
at Routes Asia, and beyond,
on tapping into the Asian and
Far East markets, including
China, Malaysia and Indonesia,
as they are markets that
are currently not served. In
addition, the airport is targeting
growth to underserved
markets such as Bangkok,
Manila and Colombo. “For
2014, our route development
strategy will revolve around
continuing to stimulate traffic
from our catchment area
(which includes eastern Saudi
Arabia) and focusing on closer
underserved markets such
as the Indian Subcontinent,”
concludes Fakhro.

growth returns
Pulkovos
passenger power
This year looks set
to be a busy one for
St. Petersburg
Pulkovo Airport. “In
2014, our passenger
traffic plan was to
increase to 14.2 million (+10%
over 2013 figures). However, in
January 2014, our passenger
traffic growth exceeded this
level, increasing by 16%,” states
Olga Vlasova, Head of Aviation
Marketing Department for the
Russian airport. Thanks to the
new terminal opening last
December, Pulkovo now has the
opportunity to significantly
increase its O&D and transfer
passenger flows. Growing
feeder traffic from Russian
regions and CIS countries
increases its O&D potential for
acquiring new direct routes. “On
this basis, we expect a 15%
increase in domestic
passengers,” adds Vlasova.
Asian route strategy
“To open new destinations in new
countrymarkets in this region
we have carefully prepared for
Routes Asia,” says Vlasova. “We
have crafted 15 presentations
using airport statistics andMIDT
data. In addition, we also prepared
six detailed case studies in the
Beontra Program.” Pulkovo is the
first airport in Russia (and one
of around 30 worldwide) which
uses Beontra (scenario planning
software) for preparing route
development cases.
“We are also in close cooperation
with St. Petersburg local
stakeholders to get first-hand
information about tourism
development trends,” continues
Vlasova. “We see the effectiveness
of trilateral meetings arranged
between the airline, tourism
authorities and us, the airport.”
The newterminal ‘Pulkovo’
was opened
for its first passengers on 4 December 2013.
With capacity for 17 million annual passengers,
the building is the only centralised terminal
for both domestic and international flights in
St. Petersburg and will ultimately be able to
accommodate up to 35 million passengers a year
by 2040, when all three stages are complete.
