Now’s the time to fly to Oslo
The Norwegian
economy is booming,
and with a wealth of
sustainable, profitable route
opportunities – and
passenger traffic of 23
million compared to a
national population of five
million people speaking
volumes – now is
unequivocally the time for
airlines to connect to Oslo.
The country’s oil and gas
industry continues to
flourish, and business travel
is driving the airport’s
growth, while its popularity
with tourists is escalating,
thanks to natural
phenomenon like the
Northern Lights, fjords and
city-edging ski resorts.
A 117,000sqm terminal
expansion is currently
underway at Oslo
International Airport, set
to be completed in 2017,
that will see the addition
of a new pier enabling
increased movements
and new departures and
arrivals areas, as well as
new baggage handling
facilities. It is also
developing enhanced rail
connectivity for the 40% of
its passengers that travel
to the airport by train – the
highest number in Europe.
“This second phase of
our development will see
the airport double in size,
allowing us ample capacity
to grow well beyond our 23
million passenger traffic,”
said Knut Stabaek, Director
Traffic Development, Oslo
Airport.“It will also provide
us with the facilities for
further development,
and will allow for more
long-haul services, for
which we’ll be developing
more add on services for
long-haul airlines such
as lounges and facilities
for transfer passengers.”
The airport is the closest
in Scandanavia to the US
(it takes just 6.5 hours
to travel to New York)
– a huge advantage for
airlines with operations
across the Atlantic, and at
World Routes Oslo Airport
hopes to advance its route
network in the US region.
“We have more than 20
meetings with airlines
over the next few days,
many with carriers that
we have met with before,
in the hope of finalising
deals in the US, Asia, and
regions of Europe that the
airport doesn’t yet serve.”
On top of it all, Avinor will
be blowing out candles
tomorrow to mark the 15th
birthday of Oslo Airport,
and in-terminal activities
for its passengers over the
coming weeks – including
the opportunity for 15
travellers to win $800 of
free travel – will celebrate
the opening of Norway’s
busiest airport.
The intense blood red of the sun setting atop an Oslo
fjord inspired a forlorn Edvard Munch to bring into
being his most famous work, recreated at Routes
World by Knut Stabaek, Director Traffic Development,
Oslo Airport.
Stabaek showcases more of the captivating cultural
and natural qualities that Norway counts among
the touristic assets that give Oslo its popularity as a
destination, including local salmon, and unparalleled
Norwegian sportsmanship.
