Produced by:
Colin Naidoo, Manager of Commu-
nications and Brand at King Shaka
International Airport, gives a guided
tour around the five-year-old terminal
building which officially opened on 1
May 2010, six weeks before Durban
became part of South Africa’s world
stage when it hosted the FIFA World
Cup, the first time the competition
was hosted in Africa.
King Shaka was the first greenfield
airport to be built in South Africa for
over 50 years. The name for Durban’s
Airport came from the Zulu warrior
King Shaka, who was originally from
the area. The airport is currently work-
ing on developing a new statue of
the warrior, which it is hoped
will become a centrepiece for the
terminal building.
A guided tour of
Durban Airport
Colin Naidoo,
Manager of
Communications
& Brand, Airports
Company South Africa,
welcomed delegates as
they arrived for the
morning tour of
Durban’s ‘King Shaka’
International Airport.
The facility, which is the
first greenfield airport
site to be opened in
South Africa in the past
50 years, commenced
operations on 1 May
2010, six weeks before
the city was broadcast
onto the world stage as it
hosted several games of
the FIFA World Cup in
2010, the first time the
competition had been
hosted in Africa.
Not only did delegates
receive a very informa-
tive and well planned
tour, but they also got the
opportunity to become
big kids as the airport’s
fire department let them
have fun with three of
their Rosenbauer fire
trucks, one of which was
used in the Transform-
ers movies before being
delivered to the airport.
After learning about,
and playing with, the
airport’s fire equipment,
delegates were then
invited to look around
the fire station, and
take a closer look into
the ECC (Emergency
Commander Centre) and
were also given a brief
outlook of Dube Trade-
port, planned to become
the first aerotropolis in
South Africa, and indeed
the African continent.
