Crater expectations
AEROPUERTO INTERNACIONAL MONSEÑOR OSCAR ARNULFO ROMERO
Over 40 Routes
Americas delegates
took the opportunity on Sunday
morning to visit one of El
Salvador’s greatest natural
wonders – the massive volcano
of San Salvador, located in El
Boquerón Park, around 45
minutes from the event venue.
The volcanic crater is around 1.5
kilometres across and over 550
metres deep. The most recent
eruption of the volcano was
nearly 100 years ago, in 1917.
Although the three-bus
cavalcade took everyone almost
to the top, the last couple of
hundred metres had to be done
on foot. But once there, the view
into the giant crater made the
short hike well worthwhile. After
a trip to the visitor centre, an
early lunch was had at a nearby
restaurant, where delegates were
treated to the national dish of
pupusas, which are thick corn
tortillas stuffed with cheese,
beans and/or meat. The more
adventurous also tried some of
the sauces that were offered to
add an extra taste. During the
journey to and from the park, the
knowledgeable guides gave a
fascinating insight into a variety
of subjects relating to El
Salvador’s history, culture,
nature and future potential.
Delegates on the tour came from
all over the Americas, but the
Canadian contingent were
especially happy as their
country had earlier that morning
won the Olympic Gold Medal in
the ice-hockey, beating Sweden.
Are we there yet? After being driven up most of the
way in comfortable buses, delegates had to walk the
final few hundred metres to reach the rim of the over
1.5 kilometre wide San Salvador volcano.
We made it! Group ‘B’, which included delegates from Halifax,
Pittsburgh, Saint Louis, San Antonio and Vancouver airports (as well
as non-airport attendees from Boeing, Diio Mi, Flightglobal, Turkish
Airlines and VivaColombia), finally get to see into the crater. But not
until they posed for a group shot for anna.aero.
Bekir Biyikli, Network Planning Analyst, Turkish Airlines and
Jason Tse, Manager Marketing Research, Vancouver Airport,
enjoy the view from the edge of the crater. Vancouver is not
among Turkish Airlines’ over 200 destinations served. If it
were to be served, it would become the airline’s fourth longest
non-stop route after Los Angeles, Sao Paulo and Houston.
The Cranfield connection: anna.aero’s Chief Analyst Ralph Anker
met up with his former boss, Dr Fariba Alamdari, VP Market &
Value Analysis, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Both once worked
as academics at the UK’s Cranfield University, in the Air Transport
Department teaching many future airline and airport executives.
