EL SALVADOR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT’S GRAND PLAN
Talking with Alberto Arene, President of the Autonomous Port Executive
Commission (CEPA) — El Salvador International Airport operator.
Q: What sets El Salvador
international Airport
apart from other Central
American airports?
As the only terminal
certified as a ‘Safe
Airport’ in Central
America, the airport
operates year-round,
thanks to the country’s
weather conditions, the
modern equipment for
air navigation services,
the renovated facilities
for aircraft ground
operations and a fully-
equipped and remodelled
passenger terminal.
Additionally, the airport
also offers the most
competitive taxes in
Central America.
Q: Over the last 12 months
which were your main
challenges and how did
you deal with them?
The main challenge was
to define a project list
according to the airport’s
priorities for equipment
and infrastructure.
This step was needed
before we could access
securitisation funds
($58.3 million) and the
allocation of resources
($20.2 million) from
CEPA’s own budget. All
this was possible after
signing agreements
with the United
Nations Development
Program and with the
United Nations Office
for Project Services;
thanks to this technical
support, all bidding
processes and the
execution of projects
were quick, transparent,
competitive, and
achieved in record
time for CEPA and the
Salvadoran Government.
Q: What are your key
objectives in terms
of airport customer
experience?
Ultimately, we want
to create and operate
an airport with the
best possible customer
experience. Firstly,
this means efficiency
using our 20-minute
rule. We have a
commitment to take
our passengers from
aircraft to curbside in 20
minutes or less. In this
process, immigration
clearance is a key area
for us. We would like
to reduce immigration
procedures down to
three minutes, partly by
introducing biometrics
to allow passengers to
clear border formalities
more quickly. These
bigger issues aside, we
also want passengers to
have accessible electric
sockets at boarding
lounges and free Wi-Fi.
