Q: How significant are
the development projects
for the airport’s future
success?
The Rehabilitation,
Modernisation and
Optimisation Plan
(2012–2014) and the El
Salvador International
Airport’s Expansion Plan
(2014–2032), are both
relevant projects that
will help the airport to
continue being the only
terminal certified as a
‘Safe Airport’ in Central
America. These projects
will also refurbish and
expand airport facilities
and services for airlines,
passengers and visitors,
which will enhance
Avianca’s hub operations
in Central America.
They will also help in
attracting new business
activities to develop the
air cargo terminal, the
Aeronautical Cluster
and other high-tech and
innovation companies
in the airport’s adjacent
industrial areas.
Q: What is your forecast
for the commercial
air traffic market in El
Salvador?
CEPA aims this year to
have ready all runway
facilities, equipment and
infrastructure needed
to strengthen hub
operations, and increase
the number of passengers
from 2.3 million in 2013
to 2.8 million by the
end of 2014. From 2014
to 2032 passengers
average annual growth
rate will be 3% to 4% —
most of this growth is
due to an increase of
transfer passengers —
reaching in 2017, three
million passengers,
3.5 million in 2022 and
4.7 million in 2032,
when Stage IV of our
expansion plans are
due to be completed.
For CEPA, it is also very
important to expand its
network throughout the
Americas, increasing
air traffic, which will
generate a new demand
for hotel and tourism
services. Furthermore,
the cargo terminal
will be developed
The fire crews at El Salvador international Airport are able to
receive aircraft up to Category nine – which allows them to
provide adequate cover for the four times weekly A340 service
operation from Madrid with iberia — currently its only European
service. The fire crews are incredibly well-trained and are ready
and waiting to provide that all-important fire Truck Water Arch
for the start of any new services to the airport.

Q: Have you had any experience or event that has
left a mark on your life?
Before I started my career, as a teenager, I had a very positive
experience being a basketball player; I was one of the
youngest players in my category, in my school team at the
Jesuit School Externado de San José. The challenges that
basketball placed before me had a positive impact on my life,
because they taught me to channel my efforts to better myself
within a team. That experience showed me that you need
people supporting you as well as an organisation. Taking this
into my adult life, I understand that countries can develop
when they have an adequate social and public organisation
capable of convincing people and groups in joining together
under a common strategy to achieve national development.
