In 2013, Aruba Airport
finished the year with
a traffic increase of 7.1% when
compared to 2012 — with just
over 1.1m passengers handled.
Despite that success, Routes
Americas is a key event for the
Caribbean island airport,
situated just 27 miles (45
kilometres) off the Venezuelan
coast. “We have been preparing
for Routes Americas for the last
two months,” says Jo-Anne
Arends, Head of Airline
Marketing at the airport. “We
have booked 16 meetings and we
will bring some goodies — but we
will keep them a surprise!”
Route shopping list
Top of the route shopping list
for Arends while she is in San
Salvador are six key unserved
route opportunities. “It would
be great if I could come back
from Routes Americas with
some progress on new routes
to San Juan (Puerto Rico),
Dallas, Pittsburgh, Detroit,
Sao Paulo Guarulhos and
Mexico City,” states Arends.
“Our airport is known for its
incentives, for attending to
each airline according to their
needs, constantly improving
its facilities and for having a
relatively new terminal. This
makes us different and attracts
airlines to our airport.”
Looking ahead, Insel Air Aruba
is planning to commence four
times weekly MD-80 services
to Miami on 11 April. On 1
July, Southwest Airlines will
start services to Aruba, taking
over former AirTran Airways
routes from Atlanta, Baltimore/
Washington and Orlando.

Austin-Bergstrom
International Airport
served a record-breaking 10
million passengers for the first
time in 2013. Serving the state
capital, which is just eight miles
(13 kilometres) away, three new
carriers inaugurated service at
Austin in 2013 — with Aeromar
launching flights to Mexico City,
Allegiant Air to Las Vegas and
Virgin America to San Francisco.
Other new non-stop routes
added in 2013 included New
Orleans with Southwest Airlines
and Cleveland with United
Airlines, which means that
Austin is now connected by
year-round services to all eight
of United’s hubs.
New for 2014
There are high expectations
for 2014 too, following the
announcement of Austin’s first
transatlantic non-stop route,
with British Airways beginning
flights from its London Heathrow
hub on 3 March. Providing a
link to more than 70 different
countries across the world, the
flight will be operated by the
oneworld airline’s 787s five
times weekly, increasing to daily
flights in May. “The Heathrow
route alone provides a $70-$75
million annual economic impact
to Austin,” adds Jamy Kazanoff,
Assistant Director for the airport.
